Presidential Suite, Hotel Cala di Volpe, Porto Cervo, Italy
At a “mere” 450 meters square and costing “just” US$26,000 per night, the Presidential Suite at Porto Cervo’s Hotel Cala di Volpe is rather more laid back and understated than its Swiss counterpart. However, this suite, which boasts three luxurious bedrooms, a huge private swimming pool and its own solarium and gym, offers all that a jet-setting visitor to the Italian coast could desire. Porto Cervo has long been a playground for the rich and famous, so every inch of the Presidential Suite, from its beamed ceilings to its traditionally tiled floors, oozes luxury and sophistication.

The Carravelle Hotel, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
For lovers of gadgetry and modernity, Saigon’s Carravelle Hotel is the place to go. Highly popular with celebrities, especially during the annual Vietnam Film Festival, the Carravelle features high-tech fixtures in every room. For example, all rooms have a flat screen plasma TV, and all curtains, lights and air conditioning units can be operated via remote control. The bathroom mirrors feature an LCD flat screen TV. Home must seem like rather hard work after a stay at this high-tech haven, which is located in the terribly fashionable area of Yorkville.
While these hotel rooms will be way outside the budget of the vast majority of people, they do illustrate a key point, which is that those who can, are willing to pay huge amounts of money for top class hotel rooms – because the quality of one’s accommodation in Ho Chi Minh City really matters. This may be particularly true during a holiday in Vietnam, but it also applies to, and has implications for, the quality and standards of home decor and furnishings. Although the world’s top hotel rooms may be prohibitively expensive, they can also be positively inspirational.
